 Hydrogen fuel cells promise an efficient energy source for our future. As an electrochemical energy conversion device, a fuel cell produces electricity from an external supply of fuel such as hydrogen and an oxidant such as oxygen or air. A complete fuel cell system consists of a source of hydrogen (high-pressure storage or generation), a fuel cell stack, and inverters or power conditioners. Fuel cell designs, based on different electrolytes, include proton exchange membrane, direct methanol, alkaline, phosphoric acid, molten carbonate and solid oxide.
