Responding to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandates dating back to 1970, programs have been developed to identify and help reduce ozone and carbon monoxide air pollution associated with automobile usage. Many companies have developed testing benches with computerized analyzers to test automobile emissions. In order for these analyzers to accurately measure automobile exhaust, they must first be calibrated. Reference points must be established, including a zero point indicating no pollutants and a high mark to indicate high levels of pollutants. Containerized gases used to establish and maintain these reference points are called calibration gases.
