What is “traceability”?
NIST defines traceability as the property of the result of a measurement or the value of a standard whereby it can be related to stated references, usually national or international standards, through an unbroken chain of comparisons, all having stated uncertainties.
Accurate chemical analysis plays a vital role in international trade, protection of the environment, and in public health and safety. Analysis must be accurate and performed by competent technicians using unbiased procedures. Use of reference materials and calibration standards is essential in assuring the quality of the analytical process. Scott Specialty Gases works closely with national and international standards institutes such as those listed below, to actively develop specialty gas reference materials used in a variety of commercial and regulatory applications. For example, Scott collaborated with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and NIST in the development of EPA protocol reference standards used for air pollution monitoring. Scott is also the sole-source provider of candidate gaseous SRMs to NIST. Scott continues to work with these organizations as well as with other agencies and trade groups to develop leading edge reference gas mixtures.
