HYDROCARBON AND CHEMICAL MIXTURES

Need Help?

Changes in ambient temperature may lead to phase changes in hydrocarbon calibration mixtures. When this happens, the resulting composition may differ from the original composition. In a gaseous mixture, heavy components may condense at low ambient temperatures. In liquid mixtures, vaporization of one or more lighter components will occur as liquid is withdrawn from a cylinder, or if ambient temperature increases significantly above the temperature at which the mixture was made.

Temperature and pressure changes may cause single-phase hydrocarbon mixtures to form two phases. Analytical or calibration work may be in error if a cylinder is used in which phase changes have occurred. Scott uses "equations-of-state" developed over our 45 years of experience to predict the response of hydrocarbon gas mixtures to temperature and pressure changes. This allows us to specify the pressure and temperature at which a hydrocarbon gas mixture can be produced and still maintain a single phase, and to alert our customers to potential composition problems due to ambient temperature.

Hydrocarbon Chromatographic Standards
A virtually unlimited combination of compounds and concentrations is available from Scott, including chromatographic blends acquired from the Phillips Chemical Company. Our calibration mixtures are invaluable for calibrating instruments when analyzing trace impurities in petrochemical feedstreams or measuring the composition of hydrocarbon product streams in natural gas processing.
